This is my first post for "Walking Between the Drops"
A blog on ActiveRain ought to deal with real estate, not weather. But real estate is all about location.
And locations have weather.
ActiveRain springs from the State of Washington. In Seattle they have RAIN. Hence: ActiveRAIN.
I work in Eugene, Springfield and all of Lane County, Oregon. We have RAIN, too.
Some people think that's all we have. RAIN. RAIN. RAIN.
My family has been in Oregon for over 150 years. The most enduring question we've fielded as a family has probably been: How do you deal with all that RAIN?
My father, a good man named Farmer Hale (1890-1985), had a well-worn answer that I have inherited:
Rain is no problem! A real Oregonian learns to WALK BETWEEN THE DROPS.
Most Eugenians and Springfielders understand that answer. They probably agree. Most of them own umbrellas, but rarely ever use one. In fact, they know they have one around the house...somewhere. Ditto RAINcoats! "Got one. Never use it."
Almost all local residents think this is a great place to live. We think RAIN is fun. Often the sun shines for enough days to make us kind of miss it. We want it back. We complain to each other...until it returns.
We know RAIN makes Western Oregon green. Without it we'd probably have to rename the state. Maybe call it "West Idaho"? "Northwest Nevada"? Not!
A little RAIN makes for good humor.
Don't get me wrong. We DO love RAIN. But we hate our weather. (It's the clouds not the RAIN.) We complain about the weather all the time. We love to hate it. We question why our TV stations even bother to pay their weatherpersons.
We joke about the old pioneer saying: Oregon only has two seasons: Winter...and late in the fall.
We are sure that any really bad weather situation won't be here long. We know it will change soon. We say, "Just wait a few minutes!"
So this blog will be mostly about real estate but it will also try to show you why this is such a great place to live.
It has been my pleasure to live for months or years in California, Georgia, North Carolina, Washington, Idaho and Utah. I have been priviledged to see most of America. But I chose to come back to the place to which my great-grandfather led a wagon train from Illinois in 1852.
Many old-timers thought of this area as GOD'S COUNTRY, a truly blessed place.
If you can't wait until my future posts to learn just how great a place we enjoy here, click on my links to the local Convention and Visitor's Bureau or the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.
They probably won't tell you this is God's Country. But they will come close. They make a good case.
The convention and visitor's bureau even has a page devoted to WEATHER. Because they sort of hide it from immediate view, I've reproduced it below.
Enjoy. Be really informed. Get ready to jazz your out-of-Oregon friends with all of our great WEATHER details.
And soon, after you move here, we'll turn you into a walking chamber of commerce, because you, too, will be WALKING BETWEEN THE DROPS....
