What's been happening with home prices in the Portland, OR region in the last five years? That is up to and including October, 2009?
Here's my graph of the Case-Shiller Index data for that period:

Remember that a value of 100 on this index is equal to the level of home prices in January, 2000.
How does that obvious boom-and-bust five-year cycle compare to prices over the long run in the Portland, OR area?
Here's the same chart back through 1987:

Recent months appear to have returned Portland prices to the long term trend line. This chart shows just what a departure from reality the boom and bust really were.
