Tour Wonderful Covered Bridges
Lane County, Oregon is the covered bridge capital of the Western United States.

Lane was the first county to build covered bridges on a large scale and still maintains more than any other county west of the Mississippi River.

A truss and housing design furnished by the State Highway Department was used for most, but not all, Lane County covered bridges. Sixteen bridges are owned and maintained by Lane County and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fourteen of these are still open to traffic, a testimony to timely rehabilitation and continued good maintenance.
Oregon covered bridges are typically built of native Douglas fir. They were covered to protect them from the rainy weather.

This approximately tripled the lifespan of a wooden bridge. Many of Oregon's covered bridges have been preserved, and are popular visitors' attractions.
All Lane County covered bridges are easy to visit by automobile. No federal funds go to any Lane County covered bridge.
The South Lane area has the majority of those within the County. The South Lane bridges are well marked for a tour that begins in the City of Cottage Grove.

The bridge closest to The Row River Cabin is the Dorena Covered Bridge:

This bridge is located just past the east end of Dorena Reservoir on Shoreview DR. From Cottage Grove take Row River RD east, past Dorena Reservoir, to Dorena Covered Bridge.

Next is the Currin Covered Bridge, located on Laying Rd. at Row River RD.

Also nearby is the Mosby Creek Covered Bridge. It spans Mosby Creek near the opposite end of Laying RD. It can be reached easily from Cottage Grove by Mosby Creek RD.

The Stewart Covered Bridge is located farther South on Mosby Creek Rd at Garoutte Rd.

Also nearby, inside the City of Cottage Grove, is the Chambers Covered Railroad Bridge, the only covered railroad bridge in Oregon. Not far away is the Centennial Covered Footbridge in downtown Cottage Grove.

Hi Jim - I love covered bridges! These are great. I'm wondering what the purpose of covering them was? Do you know?
Just for the asthetics? (good enough reason if so!)
Debi
Jim, I love covered bridges also and really enjoyed your photos and facts about the covered bridges in OR.
Debi:
Thanks for your comment.
The reason is given in the post: to extend the life of the wooden road surface under the bridge roof.
Maria:
Thanks for the comment. People do actually come from far away...even other countries...to see our covered bridges.
Great photos and good way to highlight the area attractions. We have several covered bridges in Linn County too!
A man after my own heart. When we went on our little road trip a couple of weeks ago I made my husband take me to West Montrose to get some photos of the covered bridge my parents used to take us to as kids.
Lynn: Isn't Oregon a great place. Thanks for the comment.
Jenny: I love Ontario. But I have never seen a covered bridge there. This one is outstanding. How far is it from Montreal? I'll send a friend (former Oregonian) over.
Jim ! What nice character those bridges have, and very logical explanation as to why they covered them to extend the life of the wood beneath !
Very informative and easy to read post !
Cheers !

Sheldon:
Cheers? Why you even SOUND English.
You must be THAT British agent.
Don't r I won't tell anyone. Could be dangerous for you there in NEW Jersey.
Thank you for the very PROPER post.
Jim
I love covered bridges! One of my favorite books is Bridges of Madison County. And your pictures remind me about the memories that these bridges must bring back.
Pacita:
We prefer to think of Madison County as that OTHER county that's famous for bridges.
I've never read the book. But I think I saw the movie.
Thank you.
Hi Jim, I think we are about 6 or 7 hours from Montreal I live about 25 miles west of Toronto and West Montrose is in Mennonite country, near Guelph and Elmira. There are some great little towns in that area that I will have to post about sometime.
Thanks. I guess 6-7 hours would be too far for my Montreal friends to drive for a covered bridge. But it was a nice thought.
